One problem I had with the Quake engines was the really long compile times for the map. The 3D viewport in Radiant also seems to use a limited version of the game engine so you can tweak lighting effects and such quickly and easily. Makes fine tuning bits of your design very easy. Unless you are going for a Doom 1 or 2 pixel fest. I don't know if its my video card that is making all the difference but I'm still shocked at the people playing at 640x480. Like Farcry without the crappy performance. I'm able to run it at 1280x1024 on the medium setting and everything looks really killer.
I'm surprised that so many people with good systems are having to play at such low resolutions. Not good enough to make me put down Falcon 4 for any length of time, but still really good.
